**Update Your Meter by 24 November 2024 to Keep It Working**

 Prepaid Electricity Users in South Africa

If you're using a prepaid electricity meter in South Africa, it’s crucial to make sure your meter is updated before 24 November 2024. After this date, the system that generates electricity tokens is changing, and old meters won't recognize new tokens unless they are updated.


**What does this mean for you?**

If your meter isn’t updated in time, any new tokens you buy won't work. You won’t be able to recharge your electricity, and essentially, your meter will stop functioning.


**What should you do?**

1. **Get Your Meter Recoded**: Whether you're an Eskom customer or you get your electricity from a municipal supplier, you need to have your meter recoded to accept the new tokens.

2. **Enter Key Change Tokens**: When you buy your next prepaid electricity after updating your meter, you'll receive two sets of key change tokens. Enter these tokens into your meter first. Only after these have been entered can you use the regular token to top up your electricity as usual.


Make sure to act soon to ensure your electricity supply remains uninterrupted!

I get asked this question a lot! Can the council bill me for water from two years ago? The answer is yes. Councils are allowed to go back up to three years if there was an underbilling or overbilling on your account.

The city has increased the fines for illegal connections and electricity theft to R200 000 for individual and household accounts, and R10 million for business accounts. “In addition to these fines, we will also lay criminal charges and pursue recovery of lost income.

How does a payment arrangement work?

To set up a payment plan with a 10% down payment. The customer needs to acknowledge the debt and agree to pay it off within 24 installments. This plan helps the consumer to manage payments so they can avoid getting further into debt.
